False alarms do occur and it is important to be aware of possible causes and take precautionary steps to minimise the false activations. Here are some examples for you to check against:
- If your home is prone to geckos; smear a thin layer of petroleum jelly around the edges of the sensor to deter them from running across and false alarming the system. Insects, pests and pets can be a cause.
- To avoid false movement whilst away, ensure windows are closed (to avoid movement of the blinds and curtains) / avoid hanging objects from the ceiling near a sensor and be mindful of fax / printer machines activating in the night
- Poor or incorrect installation. Seek advice from your security advisor for correct types and correct placement of your sensors
- Install PET sensors if you have small pets in the house
- Ensure correct OUTDOOR detectors are installed for outdoor areas
- Ensure LONG RANGE detectors for industrial / warehousing
- Power failure or surges
- Telecommunications error
- Old equipment
- Drafts or breezes from open windows or air conditioners
- User Error.
